Flake (Chip) Garage Floor Coating in Reno, Nevada

The flake garage floor coating is the most popular finish we install in Reno. Vinyl color flake broadcast to refusal over a pigmented epoxy or polyaspartic base coat, then locked under a clear UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. The result is a hardwearing, slip-resistant, easy-to-clean floor with a speckled texture that hides minor slab imperfections, dropped tools, and the everyday wear of a working Reno garage. Most one- and two-car homes are completed in one to two days.

What A Flake Floor Is And Why It Works

A flake garage floor coating is a multi-component decorative system. After diamond grinding the slab and repairing any cracks, a pigmented base coat (epoxy or polyaspartic) is rolled across the floor. While the base is still wet, vinyl color flakes are hand-broadcast into the surface to refusal. The next day the loose flakes that did not land flat are scraped down and vacuumed away. A clear UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat is then rolled over the entire floor, sealing the flakes in and creating the protective, easy-to-clean surface that is the floor's working layer.

The reason this is the most popular finish in Reno is simple: the flake adds texture, slip resistance, and character without sacrificing durability. The textured surface hides the everyday cosmetic toll of a working garage. The slip resistance matters when you walk in from a wet driveway in February. And the wide range of color blends means almost any home or style can be matched without going custom.

Why Flake Suits Reno Garages

Choosing A Flake Blend And Size

Picking the look is two decisions: the blend and the size.

The blend is a mix of colored vinyl chips at specific percentages. Common blends include classic gray-black-white, warm tan-brown-gray earth tones, modern black-white-pewter combinations, and bolder blends for show garages. The base coat color shows through the small gaps between flakes, so the base color also matters. We bring sample boards to the in-garage walk so you can see real combinations under your own lighting.

The size is typically 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch. Larger 1/4-inch flakes give a bolder, more textured look that hides imperfections aggressively. Smaller 1/8-inch flakes give a finer, more uniform appearance that reads cleaner from a distance. Some homeowners pick a blend of both sizes for a layered look. There is no wrong answer, just preference.

Our Flake Floor Install Process

  1. In-garage walk and written estimate. We measure, look at slab condition, identify any prep work, and line-item the quote.
  2. Move-out and mask. We move gear, mask walls and edges, and protect anything that stays.
  3. Diamond grinding and concrete repair. Full slab ground to CSP 2-3 profile. Cracks chased and filled. Slab vacuumed.
  4. Pigmented base coat. Two-part epoxy or polyaspartic base coat mixed, poured, squeegeed, back-rolled.
  5. Flake broadcast. Vinyl chips hand-broadcast into wet base to refusal across the entire floor.
  6. Set and scrape. Floor sets overnight (epoxy) or for a few hours (polyaspartic). Loose flake scraped down and vacuumed.
  7. Clear polyaspartic topcoat. Rolled across the entire floor to seal the flake and protect the system.
  8. Cure and walkthrough. Foot traffic that evening, vehicles in 24 to 48 hours. We hand you a care guide.
