A metallic epoxy floor is the decorative end of the epoxy floor coating world. Instead of a uniform color or a flake broadcast, the floor is finished with a metallic pigment dispersed through a clear-bodied epoxy. The installer manipulates the wet resin while it is curing, which creates a marbled, three-dimensional, almost liquid look that shifts as you walk around it. The result is a one-of-a-kind floor that suits Reno show garages, finished basements, home gyms, and entertaining spaces where the floor is meant to be a focal point rather than just a working surface.
Metallic epoxy is a multi-step decorative system. The slab is diamond-ground and any cracks repaired, then a pigmented base coat is rolled to lock in a uniform background color. Once the base is set, a second coat of clear-bodied epoxy heavily loaded with metallic pigment is poured and spread with a notched squeegee. While the metallic coat is wet, the installer uses leaf blowers, brushes, and chemical solvents to manipulate the pigment, creating the swirls, rivers, and pearls that give the floor its character. Once the metallic layer is cured, two clear high-build topcoats are rolled to seal the system and protect the decorative work underneath. The last topcoat is a UV-stable polyaspartic so the floor does not yellow under Reno's sun.
Metallic epoxy is not the right choice for a working garage that takes a lot of dirt, snowmelt, dropped tools, and hot tire traffic. The smoother surface shows scratches faster than a flake floor and is more slippery when wet. For those spaces a flake system is the better call.

Metallic epoxy is more sensitive to environment than a standard flake floor. The metallic pigment continues to move while the resin is wet, which means temperature and humidity affect how the pattern develops. In Reno we plan metallic installs around the local weather, schedule them indoors with the garage door closed for the wet phases, and time the work so the manipulation phase happens at a stable temperature. We avoid the hottest summer afternoons (resin sets too fast) and the coldest winter mornings (resin moves too slowly), and we will tell you straight at the quote when the best window for your install is.
